Is Digital Art Real Art?

Having been one of the many kids who used to spend majority of their free time drawing on paper, and finally being able to try out digital art recently, I thought of maybe discussing art and my experiences with it.

Art has always been defined as a way for man to express his thoughts and feelings. It begun way back, long before anyone actually knew it was art. Animal carvings found on cave walls indicate that even cavemen were able to produce art centuries ago. Visual art, which is one of the many forms of art, has evolved through the decades and has now come up in variations, many of which are made from mediums such as: oil, paint, charcoal, glass, and even salt. This is what we'd like to call traditional art - anything which is made from materials that you can physically touch. Recently, with the creation of the computers, digital art was also introduced. Digital art is basically art that requires the computer's aid. Drawing softwares/programs, as well as equipment such as a WACOM tablet are also a huge necessity. Lastly, unlike traditional art, digital art's medium cannot be physically touched. Despite the two's differences, both of them are still art.

However, there HAVE been debates as to whether or not digital art should be considered as real art. And why shouldn't it be? Digital art may be more convenient as revisions would be faster, but it isn't any easier than traditional art nor should it be deemed as the more inferior art form. It can still be used as a means to express oneself, which is one of art's main purposes. It may be a lot more expensive with its tools being more accessible and digitalized, but digital art is STILL art and can STILL be used as an outlet for creativity.

  1. Art is art, no matter the medium. Purists may argue that the coming of the digital art age will ruin future generations' abilites to appreciate and make "art". However, I feel it fit to argue that man is only doing what it does best. Evolve. Times are changing. Years ago, we didn't have typewriters to make books but I don't see anyone complaining. The digital age is only proof that our species is in fact, learning. Digital immigrants who are unable to use the current technology may find themselves unable to live in this society. But we're going off topic now. Traditional art is in no way better than digital art and vice versa. They were both made with time, effort and creativity . It all boils down to this, if you cannot appreciate digital art, then go back to the stone ages where you belong, you Neanderthal.

  2. Art is a vast subject, and discussing its meaning sometimes borders its subjectivity and relativity. Being a practitioner of both forms, that is, both digital and traditional, I'd like to agree with you that digital art should indeed be considered an art, still. Although it doesn't use the different materials traditional artists use, such as brushes and paints and palettes, they do have the wide range of programs and software to use to create their art. Your point on art being a means for a person to express his/her emotions and thoughts is commendable, and I'm hoping that such point is kept on any layman's mind when even thinking of how digital art should not be considered an art.

  3. No matter what the method is it is still art as long as the artist express their own thoughts and ideals. The only difference is the effort that they do. It is really amazing to witness art that is traditional because they have the tools to work on but in digital the tools are easy to access that's why it looks better and modernized than the traditional.

  4. The human race is constantly evolving and this includes all the technology and the way things are done. Over the years many things have changed, from the way we socialize to the way we work to the way we make art.

Qhat is art? Art is a way of applying the human minds skill and imagination, whether it be in a form of painting, image, etc. So who are we to say digital art isn't REAL art? or it isn't as satisfying or appealing as traditional art? Digital art is still made using the imagination of our minds. This way of making art may be more efficient and leaves less space for mistakes, but nevertheless, it is still art. The forms of art or how it is made should not be compared, they are all unique and may i say, quite beautiful in their own way.

  5. As said that art is defined as a way to express his thoughts and feelings, so why would they say that digital art is not real art even though they've put alot of hours and effort on making such art? I don't see any difference on both of them, they're both a work of art regardless of the method and equipment used. Thoughts, feelings and effort was still exerted during the process, so I don't think they should be compared and people appreciate both digital and traditional art.

  6. I agree that digital art is still considered art. By definition, it is still a way of expressing one's self. Only it uses different material. Photography is wildly acclaimed as a form of art and digital art is not far from it. Therefore, digital art should still be considered art.

  7. Digital art is still considered art. You can express yourself and be creative using digital materials. Also, you can even improve and edit it your work to make it more attractive and pleasing to the eyes.

  8. The only people that think digital art is easy or just slapping some stuff together are the ones who never tried it themselves. Digital is just another medium and honestly anyone trying to label another person's thoughts, feelings and expression as "real" or "fake" is only trying to convince you their own personal disdain is somehow justified.
